Historical Sites That Transport You Through Time : Exploring the Treasures of South Devon
If the stunning beaches, dramatic moors or the lure of a Devon cream scone isn’t enough to tempt you to visit, there’s plenty of historic sites to explore and enjoy during your trip to the South West.
Dartmouth Castle
We begin our adventure with a visit to Dartmouth Castle, a beautiful and imposing fortress on the Dart Estuary. Dating back to the 14th century, the castle has protected Dartmouth for over 600 years.
While it was designed to keep out unwanted visitors, you will be welcomed with open arms! Take time to see the battlements, climb to the top for fabulous views, and meander through its winding passageways.
Visit on a fine day and you can take the river boat from the quay to make your visit even more memorable.
Buckfast Abbey
Home to an order of Roman Catholic Benedictine Monks, Buckfast Abbey was rebuilt between 1906 and 1937 on medieval foundations and is a fantastic family day out. The Abbey Church and gardens are amongst the West Country’s most popular attractions thanks to the extensive grounds, famous Lavender Garden, exhibition centre and The Grange Restaurant.
Teignmouth Grand Pier
Less grand that some of the other spots we’ve mentioned but with its own charm, Teignmouth’s own Grand Pier has been open since 1867, is a local place of pride. With traditional attractions, amusements, ice cream and access from the level seafront, the Pier is a must-visit for guests at the Cliffden, and at just a half mile walk from the hotel, why would you miss it?
Attractions mentioned may have paid, ticketed entry and limited opening hours. Please check before visiting.
Powderham Castle
The Grade I listed, fortified manor house was built in the 14th century and remains the family home of The Earl of Devon. Explore the castle, meander through the gardens and grounds and entertain the kids at the Play Area and Pets Corner, home to pot-bellied pigs, goats, chickens and more.
Dartmoor Prison Museum
For an atmospheric and engaging day out, Dartmoor Prison Museum is found high on Dartmoor and tells of more than 200 years of prison history. Having been a Prison of War Depot for French and American prisoners of war, there’s plenty to see, do and learn during your visit.
